One day, one *glorious* day, I want to make a Secure Group. As I have been
chatting about it quite a bit in the office, I thought I would get my
ideas down. My current plan is to work on this in my own time, after the
Group Product is completed
A secure group would encrypt and sign all messages from the group, and
require all email messages to the group to be encrypted and signed. To
achieve this, the Public Key property is required for all members who wish
to post. The homepage of the group will display the group's public key to
all group members.
The Security settings for the group will not have a public option: only
private and secret. In addition the group will have a Paranoia setting.
1. Occasionally Looking Over My Shoulder
* Email messages that are sent from the group are signed and
encrypted
* Only email messages that are signed and encrypted will be accepted
* Email headers are left intact
2. The Government and Corporations are Against Us
* Same as Level 1, but the email headers rewritten so the From
address is the group, and the Subject line is replaced with
just the group name
* Actual From information is placed in the body of the message,
which is encrypted
3. They Are Out To Get You Too
* Same as Level 2 except the main email body is replaced with a link
to the post.
4. They Are Everywhere (except the server)
* Same as Level 3 except the post contains 1–5 random quotes; the
links to the post is placed randomly among the quotes.
Richard suggested another feature that could be used with the secure group, or
independently of it: email anonymising.
1. Email arrives.
2. The 'from' address is stripped, and replaced with a
user-USERHASH-CHANGINGSEED @ something
(@onlinegroups or @forums.e-democracy etc.)
3. Replies to that address are resolved and emailed to
the user (or perhaps stored on the site instead).
4. The 'CHANGINGSEED' bit could be periodically changed
to make it impossible to store for more than a few
days.
This feature would be useful to those who
* Belong to an organisation which rejects email based
on the From: address (They exist. Ask me how I
know…)
* Want anonymity from the group, or
* Are super paranoid about giving out their email
address.
The Mythical Secure Group is designed to support the super paranoid, so I
totally endorse this feature ☺
I think this feature makes sense. We actually have users who don't understand that our forums are e-mail list when they join their interactive experiences are more Facebook than anything else. I don't know that we would use it ... but it is possible particularly for special online events. This site is provided by OnlineGroups.Net, where you can start your own free online groups site, using the open source web-based mailing list manager GroupServer.
