Just any idea ... Have a generic change password URL we can use in help communications. Something like: http://forums.e-democracy.org/changepassword That would forward IF logged in to: http://forums.e-democracy.org/contacts/stevenclift/userpassword.xml Or if NOT logged in, to a login page that would forward the person straight to the change password page. Of course, if you are switching the system to allow people to choose their own password when registering, this might not be as needed.

Hi Steve:
In principle, in the *old* system, the idea is very sound.
In the *new* system, users will be able to get a link sent to them which
will *always* be capable of letting them change their password, even
without logging in first. They will be sent a cryptographic link which
effectively authenticates them to the system, and they will be able to
change their password directly (they will also be logged into the system
without having to proceed to login as well).
I don't see any particular reason (other than time/money) that there
couldn't be an admin panel for triggering these to be sent out to a
particular user (perhaps with an additional support message).
First, Steve, what is the problem you are trying to solve? You mention “help communications”, but you fail to communicate… what you want to communicate ☺ Currently, we are working on rewriting most aspects of the user's profile, including setting the password. The initial post that I made to the Password Reset topic discusses administrators resetting the user's password, and how it will work: http://groupserver.org/r/post/3JJvi3M6zykWP5SCogRZK I have also posted a prototype reset-password page http://groupserver.org/groups/development/reset_password_prototype (I am still working on the Set Password page.)
