A couple of problems have come up recently in our organization's GroupServer
that I wanted to get some assistance with.
1. When a poster includes a URL in their message, the link appears to have
encoding issues for some, but not all, recipients (the victims seem to be using
either AOL webmail or GMX, while Gmail appears unaffected). Specifically, for
the portion of the URL after the domain prompt and initial slash following it,
any further slashes or hyphens have "%E2%80%8B" prepended to them. For example:
https://www.change.org/p/fix-penn-station-fund-amtrak-s-gateway-project
Came through with an A tag pointing to:
https://www.change.org/p%E2%80%8B/fix%E2%80%8B-penn%E2%80%8B-station%E2%80%8B-fund%E2%80%8B-amtrak%E2%80%8B-s%E2%80%8B-gateway%E2%80%8B-project
Another oddity is that for these recipients the A tag on that link only wraps
the URL up to the initial slash (eg. users will be able to click on
https://www.change.org/ and will be sent to the garbled URL above, but the
rest of the URL won't be a link). I assume these two things are related.
2. Some of our users have a habit of forwarding emails or email threads they
received from outside the list to the list. The problem with this is that
GroupServer appears to assume that any quoted text should be omitted from the
email sent to list members, meaning that the only way to view that text is to
login to the web interface and click the "Rest of Post" link. While I imagine
that determining whether a user is actually quoting content that's already part
of the GroupServer thread or not would take some doing, it would be a big
usability improvement.
