One of the things about joining a group using email is that we cannot tell if
you are wanting to add an address to an existing profile, or create a new
profile. We will assume the latter, as it is the common case.

    Joining a Group Using Email

      To join a group using email, carry out the following tasks.

      1. Send a message to the group, with Subscribe in the subject line.
         You will receive a verification message in reply. If you do not
         have a GroupServer profile, one will be created.

      2. Reply to the verification message, making no alterations to the
        message — other than those automatically carried out by your email
        client. You will receive an email message, confirming that you have
        joined the group.

I recall Richard wistfully musing about merging email accounts, but that is
something for the far future ☺
