I did not explain the nickname clearly, Steve. Sorry.
The nickname is used to form the URL to the user's profile, not the link-text.
The nickname is an advanced feature for those who like nice URLs, much like the
Web Address in the settings of a Flickr account. I have all sorts of ideas for
the display name, such as making the user's roles more explicit, but that is
for another topic ☺
There are two reasons for introducing the nickname. First, the display name can
get quite large, and is not nice to write down: MichaelJasonSmith rather than
mpj17. This becomes important as we want to introduce the *option* of public
profiles, so people will be sharing the profile-URL more. Second, we are
dropping the current user-IDs, in favour of randomised user-IDs that will never
be shown to the user. The Nickname currently takes over the (partly) visible
role of the user-ID.
Is that clearer, Steve?
